Being strength-based suggests that the way we interact and respond to children is rooted in the way we view them. As practitioners focused on promoting resilience in at risk children, we must maintain a positive focus even when children are difficult for us to understand. When children exhibit challenging behaviors, deficit mindsets are more prevalent. Below are some easy ways to reframe our thinking to a more strength-based perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Deficit-Based Thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n

  • What\u2019s wrong with her?<\/li>\n
  • He\u2019s just a bad kid.<\/li>\n
  • Look at her behavior.<\/li>\n
  • He doesn\u2019t even want my help.<\/li>\n
  • Punishment will get her attention.<\/li>\n
  • Give him an inch; he\u2019ll take a mile.<\/li>\n
  • He can\u2019t be trusted.<\/li>\n
