The field of trauma and resilience has accelerated over the past two decades. We now know how trauma and stress negatively affect children as young as infancy and preschool age. Despite abundant research, many well-educated and caring adults continue to think children are immune to adversity. Mistakenly, many think that infants and toddlers are unaffected by abuse, neglect and other traumatic experiences because they are \u201ctoo young to understand\u201d and \u201cresilient\u201d. What we know is that many, if not MOST, maltreated and traumatized infants and toddlers do suffer from symptoms of abuse and trauma, as victims, witnesses and even as siblings or friends of others that have experienced a trauma. While they often cannot verbalize or communicate their experiences, their dysregulated emotional and behavioral responses tell their stories.<\/p>\n
