They are traumatic. Remember: Any experience that leaves a person feeling hopeless, helpless and unable to do something about their situation is trauma. Children who experience bullying often feel unsafe at school. They might worry about seeing other students in class or in the hallways who are overtly mean by calling them names or show more covert behaviors such laughing as they walk by or giving nasty looks. Students who are bullied might be fearful of rumors saying, \u201cSomeone is going to beat you up today.\u201d They are often afraid to discuss their problems due to embarrassment or worry that reports will just make things worse.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are the Signs of Possibly Bullying?<\/h2>\n<p>While every student may process the emotional toll of bullying in different ways, there are several signs that should encourage teachers to stay curious about what might be happening:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sudden tearfulness but will not disclose what is wrong<\/li>\n<li>Sitting or doing things alone<\/li>\n<li>Self-deprecating remarks<\/li>\n<li>Changes in mood and behavior<\/li>\n<li>Decline in school functioning<\/li>\n<li>Attendance issues \u2013 students who are bullied often skip school<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Can Teachers Prevent Bullying?<\/h2>\n<p>It's certainly the responsibility of staff to intervene when witnessing or hearing about bullying in their school or classroom. However, there are several strategies for teachers to be proactive <i>before<\/i> the bullying occurs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do not brush off the small stuff. Take name-calling, mockery, harassment and threats seriously.<\/li>\n<li>Set the tone immediately for kind, inclusive and respectful interactions and behavior. Continue these discussions often.<\/li>\n<li>Make reporting bullying feel safe for victims and witnesses.<\/li>\n<li>Adult supervision should be present everywhere in the school building.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure every student feels connected to at least one adult in your building.<\/li>\n<li>Make intentional connection opportunities for students who need support from peers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-48424-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-48424-1\" ><div id=\"pgc-48424-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-48424-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child widgetopts-SO\" data-index=\"1\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-48424-1-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p align=\"center\">Making intentional efforts to connect with all students throughout the school is critical.
