Sometimes long before they ever will.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s the way they flinch when someone moves too fast. Or how they laugh a little too loudly, too often, as if trying to drown out a part of themselves they fear is broken beyond repair. Maybe it\u2019s their need to control everything\u2014or nothing at all. The way they bristle at kindness or seem to vanish in plain sight.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>This is how quiet pain enters classrooms, counseling offices, locker rooms, and living rooms. It doesn\u2019t always come with words. But we feel it. In the heavy silences. In the resistance. In the fear behind the eyes of a child who has learned that the world isn\u2019t always safe\u2014or fair.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>These children didn\u2019t choose their trauma. But now, they carry the burden of surviving it.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Survivors Need\u2014and What They Don\u2019t<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Sexual assault is one of the most invasive and complex traumas a young person can endure. And for those of us who work with youth\u2014educators, counselors, coaches, mentors, social workers, caregivers\u2014it often leaves us asking:\u00a0<br \/><strong>What do I say? What do I do? How do I help when I can\u2019t undo what\u2019s been done?<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Start here:\u00a0<strong>It\u2019s not your job to \u201cfix it.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>You don\u2019t need to rescue them or say the perfect thing. You only need to show up\u2014steadily, consistently, compassionately. Show up and <em>see them<\/em>. Not for the behaviors that make them hard to reach, but for the human being behind those behaviors.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Because often, what looks like defiance, disconnection, or disinterest is really a trauma response\u2014the only way they know how to say:\u00a0<br \/><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t choose what happened to me, but I need someone to help me believe I still get to choose what happens next.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating Spaces of Safety and Belonging<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>When the world feels unsafe, youth don\u2019t need more lectures, pressure, or problem-solving. They need spaces where:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>They don\u2019t have to be perfect to be protected.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Love doesn\u2019t have to be earned.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Their \u201cno\u201d is respected.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>Their silence isn\u2019t punished.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li>They\u2019re allowed to take up space\u2014without explaining why they\u2019re struggling to breathe in it.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>At Starr, we believe in the power of that space. We\u2019ve seen the difference that one steady, trusted adult can make: someone who doesn\u2019t look away when things get uncomfortable, who listens more than they speak, who doesn\u2019t rush the healing\u2014but sits in it with them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>An adult who says:\u00a0<strong>\u201cYou are not too much. You are not too broken. You are not too late. You are perfect exactly as you are.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Support Looks Like in Action<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>So, what does that support <em>actually<\/em> look like?\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Offering choices\u2014big and small.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>Ask, \u201cWould you like to sit by the window or the door?\u201d or \u201cDo you want to talk now or later?\u201d These moments return a sense of control.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Respecting boundaries.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>Even if you don\u2019t understand them. Even when it\u2019s hard.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Letting them guide the healing.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>Even if their journey doesn\u2019t look like a neat, upward climb.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Reclaiming mastery.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>Help them try something new, succeed at something small, and feel capable again.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<li><strong>Reconnecting with generosity.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>When they\u2019re ready, support them in rediscovering they still have something beautiful to give to the world.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>But above all else: <strong>Help them believe they still belong.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Wound of Disconnection\u2014and the Power of Presence<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The deepest wound trauma leaves is disconnection. It whispers:\u00a0<br \/><br \/><em>You don\u2019t matter.<\/em>\u00a0<br \/><em>You\u2019re not safe.<\/em>\u00a0<br \/><em>You\u2019re not lovable.<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Your role\u2014<em>our<\/em> role\u2014is to challenge that lie, every single day, with our presence, our patience, and our unwavering belief in their capacity to heal.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Here\u2019s the truth: <strong>We don\u2019t see broken kids. We see brave ones.<\/strong>\u00a0<br \/>We don\u2019t believe trauma writes the final chapter. We believe healing rewrites it\u2014with love, safety, power, and resilience at the heart of the story.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You Make the Difference<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019re doing this work\u2014whether it\u2019s in a school hallway, a therapy office, a kitchen table, or the sidelines of a game\u2014thank you. You are the light in someone\u2019s darkness. You may never fully know the impact you\u2019ve made, but they will.
