And transitions require support.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not because something is wrong\u2014but because the nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do: <strong>scan for safety, predictability, and belonging.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-just-getting-back-to-normal-doesn-t-work\"><strong>Why \u201cJust Getting Back to Normal\u201d Doesn\u2019t Work<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over a break, routines soften.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bedtimes drift.<br>Structures loosen.<br>Expectations shift\u2014or disappear entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some children, that freedom is restorative.<br>For others, it\u2019s destabilizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When young people return to structured environments, their brains aren\u2019t immediately ready to jump back into compliance, focus, or productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because before learning can happen, the brain asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Am I safe here?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do I belong here?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Do I know what to expect here?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where our role becomes powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through a <strong>trauma-informed and resilience-focused lens<\/strong>, we understand: <strong>behavior is communication\u2014and transitions amplify the message.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-start-here-don-t-rush-the-reset-design-it\"><strong>Start Here: Don\u2019t Rush the Reset\u2014Design It<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What if the goal of the first few days back wasn\u2019t to \u201ccatch up\u201d\u2026<br>&nbsp;\u2026but to <strong>reconnect, re-regulate, and re-establish rhythm<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not a return to rigidity\u2014<br>but a return to <strong>felt safety<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-rebuild-belonging-before-expectations\"><strong>1. Rebuild Belonging Before Expectations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before directions.<br>Before reminders.<br>Before \u201cwe need to get back on track.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with: <em>\u201cI\u2019m really glad you\u2019re here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belonging is not a one-time message\u2014it\u2019s something we <strong>actively recreate after every disruption<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Try this:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open with low-stakes connection circles or check-ins<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Invite storytelling: \u201cWhat\u2019s one moment from break you want to remember?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use partner shares or small group conversations instead of whole-group pressure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For quieter students, offer drawing or writing options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This aligns deeply with the <strong>Circle of Courage<\/strong>, especially the need for <strong>Belonging<\/strong>\u2014because when students feel seen, they are more willing to re-engage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-make-the-invisible-visible-re-teach-routines-without-shame\"><strong>2. You\u2019re not the only one.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This simple shift:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduces shame<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increases emotional literacy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>builds psychological safety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>And for families and providers\u2014this matters at home, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A child melting down over homework on Monday night?<br>It might not be defiance.<br>It might be <strong>transition fatigue<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-anchor-the-day-in-regulation-not-just-instruction\"><strong>4. Anchor the Day in Regulation, Not Just Instruction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If we want focus, we have to support regulation first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nervous system doesn\u2019t respond to demands\u2014it responds to cues of safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Build in micro-moments of calm:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>60-second breathing resets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stretch breaks between transitions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quiet music during independent work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sensory tools or movement options<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For some students, especially those who have experience trauma or heightened stress responses, these are not \u201cextras.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are <strong>access points to learning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-5-create-predictable-joy\"><strong>5.
