Now that the school year has begun, start setting your students up for success! Here are some proactive strategies you can implement immediately:<\/p>\n

Get to Know Your Students<\/strong>
\nGet to know your students FOR REAL, and help them get to know each other. Find out about each students\u2019 history. Create an inclusive learning environment where every student feels like an important member.<\/p>\n

Greet Students<\/strong>
\nPosition yourself at the door (or wherever makes sense for greeting students) at the start of every class period. Greet ALL students by name (learn and use nicknames or other names if preferred by the student). Give genuine, positive encouragement often.<\/p>\n

Provide Options<\/strong>
\nUtilize brain breaks and\/or differentiate instruction every 15-20 minutes. Provide 2-3 options for assignments, projects and tests. Proactively introduce options for students when they \u201cneed a moment\u201d and teach them how to self-select what works for them. Whenever possible, give choices.<\/p>\n

Routine<\/strong>
\nUtilize an established structure and follow a routine. Notify students when there is going to be a change. Check-in with students frequently.<\/p>\n

Universal Needs<\/strong>
\nTeach and prioritize values instead of rules and compliance. Foster the universal needs of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity. Recognize and celebrate acts of kindness and generosity.<\/p>\n
